Introduction
Human–Wildlife Conflict (HWC) refers to situations where interactions between humans and wildlife result in negative consequences for either or both. IUCN defines it as conflicts arising when wildlife requirements overlap with those of human populations, causing costs to people and retaliatory actions against wildlife.
Between 2019–20 and 2023–24, India recorded 2,853 human deaths and 528 elephant deaths due to human–elephant conflict, highlighting the growing ecological and socio-economic challenge posed by increasing human–wildlife interactions.

Ecological Impacts of Human–Wildlife Conflict
Decline in Wildlife Populations due to Retaliatory Killings
Repeated attacks on humans or crop damage trigger retaliatory actions such as poisoning, electrocution and shooting, which reduces already vulnerable populations of endangered species.
Example: In Assam, 626 elephant deaths were recorded over the past 23 years, with electrocution being the leading cause of mortality,
Disruption of Ecological Balance and Food Chains
Large mammals such as tigers, leopards and elephants are keystone species, with elephants serving as Ecosystem engineers that promote seed dispersal and habitat regeneration.

Loss of Human Life and Livestock
Human–wildlife conflict causes fatalities, injuries and livestock depredation, resulting in psychological trauma and significant livelihood losses for forest-fringe communities.
Example: In Uttarakhand, between 2014–2024, leopards caused over 200 human deaths and 1,000+ injuries, while a study in the Rajaji–Corbett corridor found that 19% of households reported livestock losses.
Livelihood Distress and Migration
Constant threat of attacks and financial losses makes agriculture unviable, forcing families to abandon their lands.
Farmers in Bundelkhand (Chhatarpur district) openly declared plans to migrate to Delhi and other cities for wage labour if crop losses persist.
Worsening Social Inequities:
Burden of HWC falls disproportionately on already vulnerable communities, particularly tribal populations and small-scale farmers living on forest fringes.

Way Forward

Human–wildlife conflict is not merely a conservation issue but a governance and sustainable development challenge. As envisaged in the National Wildlife Action Plan (2017–31), achieving coexistence requires protected wildlife corridors and community-based conservation. As Justice B.V. Nagarathna aptly observed, “Our focus should be on understanding why wildlife is entering human spaces rather than viewing the issue solely as wildlife encroachment”. Balancing ecological security with livelihood security is essential to fulfil Article 48A and India's commitments under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
