Recognising this, India has pursued Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence through various reforms such as DAP 2020, Positive Indigenisation Lists and Defence Corridors. Consequently, indigenous defence production has increased from ₹46,429 crore in 2014-15 to ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, marking significant transformation in India's defence industrial capabilities.

Record Growth in Defence Manufacturing
India's annual defence production has reached an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, registering a 15.6% growth over FY 2024-25 and a 110% increase since FY 2020-21 and nearly four times the production value in FY 2013-14.
Emergence as a Defence Exporter
Defence exports touched a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025-26, recording an increase of over 62% over 2024-25, reflecting the increasing global acceptance of Indian defence products.
Indian defence products are now being exported to over 80 countries, comprising BrahMos missiles, artillery systems, radars, patrol vessels, ammunition and defence components.
Increased Role of Private Sector
The private sector contributed nearly 24% of total defence production, amounting to around ₹42,000 crore in FY 2025-26, the highest ever share.
More than 16,000 MSMEs and numerous start-ups have been integrated into the defence supply chain through initiatives such as iDEX and the Technology Development Fund (TDF) and DRDO's Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) model.

India's overall Gross Expenditure on R&D remains below 1% of GDP, significantly lower than major defence powers such as the USA, China and Israel, which invest over 3-5% of GDP in R&D.
