Why it Matters? 

  • UPSC has debarred a candidate for three years for possessing incriminating material during the examination, invoking Rule 12(1)(h) to uphold exam integrity. 

What You Should Know? 

  • UPSC is a constitutional body under Part XIV (Articles 315–323) of the Indian Constitution. 

  • It was recommended by the Lee Commission (1924) and established in 1926. 

  • It was renamed as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in 1947. 

  • Composition: 

  • The UPSC comprises a chairman and other members, whose number is determined by the President of India. 

  • Tenure & Resignation: 

  • Members of UPSC hold office for a term of 6 years or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. 

  • A member may resign by writing to the President of India. 

  • Reappointment: 

  • The Chairman is ineligible for reappointment after completion of tenure. 

  • The Chairman cannot be re-employed under the Government of India or any State Government. 

  • Members can be reappointed as Chairman of the UPSC or any State PSC.
