Context: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the maiden flight trials of the Stratospheric Airship Platform from Sheopur Trial site in Madhya Pradesh.

Developed by: Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra – a DRDO lab 

Event: Maiden flight trial conducted on 03 May 2025 from Sheopur Trial Site, Madhya Pradesh 

Key Features of the Trial: Reached altitude ~17 km (Stratosphere); Carried instrumental payload  ► Flight duration: 62 minutes 

Significance: Enhances Earth Observation, Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR); Places India among few nations with indigenous high-altitude airship tech; Potential for long-endurance flights at stratospheric altitudes 

Stratospheric Airships:  ► Part of Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) platforms  ► Operate at 15–25 km altitude  ► Serve as pseudo-satellites for continuous coverage  ► Useful in disaster management, border surveillance, and telecom relay
