Stratospheric Airship Platform
Context: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the maiden flight trials of the Stratospheric Airship Platform from Sheopur Trial site in Madhya Pradesh.
Important Pointers:
► Developed by: Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra – a DRDO lab
► Event: Maiden flight trial conducted on 03 May 2025 from Sheopur Trial Site, Madhya Pradesh
► Key Features of the Trial: Reached altitude ~17 km (Stratosphere); Carried instrumental payload ► Flight duration: 62 minutes
► Significance: Enhances Earth Observation, Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR); Places India among few nations with indigenous high-altitude airship tech; Potential for long-endurance flights at stratospheric altitudes
► Stratospheric Airships: ► Part of Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) platforms ► Operate at 15–25 km altitude ► Serve as pseudo-satellites for continuous coverage ► Useful in disaster management, border surveillance, and telecom relay
