Solar PV Module

Solar PV Module

Why it Matters?

  • India has achieved 100 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), rising from 2.3 GW in 2014. Supported by the PLI Scheme and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, this milestone advances India’s 500 GW non-fossil capacity target by 2030 and enhances global competitiveness.

What You Should Know?

  • The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) is a list maintained by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

  • It specifies which models of solar PV modules and their manufacturers are approved for use in government-supported solar projects in India.

  • It is to ensure only reliable, high-quality, and tested solar PV modules are used in projects connected to the grid under government schemes.

  • ALMM for solar PV modules was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in January 2019.

  • The first ALMM list was published in March 2021 with an initial capacity of 8.2 GW.

Solar PV Module

  • A Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Module is an assembly of solar cells that convert sunlight directly into electricity using the photovoltaic effect.

  • Solar PV modules are made of solar cells arranged in series and/or parallel to form modules and arrays.

  • Solar PV modules mainly use two technology types – Crystalline Silicon and Thin-film.

  • In India, solar PV modules must comply with BIS standards including IS 14286, IS/IEC 61215, and IS/IEC 61730.

  • Solar modules convert the light energy captured from the sun into electric energy.
