Why it Matters? 

  • 29 artists from Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal showcased Sohrai, Pattachitra, and Patua art at Rashtrapati Bhavan under the Kala Utsav 2025 – Artists in Residence Programme. 

What You Should Know? Kala Utsav 2025: 

  • It is the 2nd edition of the Artists in Residence Programme hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

  • Art forms represented were Sohrai (Jharkhand), Pattachitra (Odisha), and Patua (West Bengal). 

  • It celebrates India’s folk, tribal, and traditional arts and promotes living art traditions. 

  • It aims to preserve cultural identity and inspire future generations of artists. 

 Sohrai:    

  • It is a traditional mural art form practiced mainly in Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand. 

  • It is painted during the Sohrai festival by tribal women on the walls of their mud houses. 

  • The art uses natural pigments and simple tools like twigs, rice straw, and fingers. 

  • Common themes include animals, birds, and nature, reflecting an agrarian lifestyle and wildlife reverence. 

  • Sohrai-Khovar Paintings have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for their cultural uniqueness.
