29 artists from Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal showcased Sohrai, Pattachitra, and Patua art at Rashtrapati Bhavan under the Kala Utsav 2025 – Artists in Residence Programme.
What You Should Know? Kala Utsav 2025:
It is the 2nd edition of the Artists in Residence Programme hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Art forms represented were Sohrai (Jharkhand), Pattachitra (Odisha), and Patua (West Bengal).
It celebrates India’s folk, tribal, and traditional arts and promotes living art traditions.
It aims to preserve cultural identity and inspire future generations of artists.
Sohrai:
It is a traditional mural art form practiced mainly in Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand.
It is painted during the Sohrai festival by tribal women on the walls of their mud houses.
The art uses natural pigments and simple tools like twigs, rice straw, and fingers.
Common themes include animals, birds, and nature, reflecting an agrarian lifestyle and wildlife reverence.
Sohrai-Khovar Paintings have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for their cultural uniqueness.
