Why In News:
The Prime Minister is set to release the 23rd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme from West Bengal.
What is PM-KISAN?
Launched: February 2019 to provide income support to all landholding farmer families across India.
Type:Central Sector scheme with 100% funding from Government of India.
Amount: Rs 6,000 per year in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 transferred every four months.
Implementing Ministry: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.
Mode: Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into the linked Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
Exclusions: Institutional landholders, former constitutional post holders, serving or retired government officials, professionals like doctors, engineers, lawyers, and income-tax payers are excluded.
Key Facts for Prelims
e-KYC Mandatory: Since 2022, e-KYC is compulsory for all PM-KISAN beneficiaries to prevent leakage and duplication.
PM-KISAN Mobile App: Allows self-registration and beneficiary status checks by farmers.
PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi web portal: pmkisan.gov.in allows online registration, status tracking and grievance redressal.
Small and Marginal Farmers: The scheme especially targets small (1-2 hectares) and marginal (below 1 hectare) farmers who form the backbone of Indian agriculture.
