Why In News:

The Union Home Minister is set to chair the 10th Apex Level Meeting of NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre).

About NCORD

Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Purpose: Single-point coordination body for all agencies dealing with narcotics - NCB, customs, state police, intelligence agencies.

Established: 2016 by the Ministry of Home Affairs to strengthen inter-agency coordination on drug trafficking.

India's Anti-Narcotics Architecture

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB): India's apex drug law enforcement and intelligence agency, under MHA. Enforces the NDPS Act, 1985.

NDPS Act, 1985 (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act): Primary legislation governing drug offences in India. Provides for stringent penalties including life imprisonment.

Bhang is not mentioned in the NDPS Act.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA): Awareness-driven campaign launched in 2020 to reduce demand for drugs.

International Conventions

UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961: India is a signatory. Classifies narcotic drugs and imposes control measures.

UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, 1988: Targets money laundering and precursor chemicals from drug trade.
