The Union Health Ministry filled 24 part-time posts in the National Medical Commission and its boards after months of vacancy, amid concerns over prolonged leadership gaps and virtual inspections during a CBI probe.
What You Should Know?
NMC is a statutory body established under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
It replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) based on NITI Aayog's recommendations.
NMC is the apex regulator of medical education and professionals in India.
Functions:
It regulates medical education, professionals, institutions, and medical research.
NMC grants recognition of medical qualifications across the country.
It gives accreditation to medical institutions and colleges.
It registers medical practitioners and maintains a national medical register.
It monitors medical practice and assesses medical infrastructure in India.
It consists of 33 members, including the Chairperson (medical professionals only), 10 ex-officio members, and 22 part-time members.
The NMC oversees four autonomous boards:
Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB)
Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB)
Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB)
Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB)
The Chairperson and other members cannot be renominated.
Its headquarters are located in New Delhi.
