National Industrial Corridor Development Programme and FIRE Corridors (Economy)
Why In News:
The Apex Monitoring Authority of National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) reviewed progress under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) and emphasised on the convergence of Freight, Industrial Development, Railways and Expressways (FIRE Corridors) for integrated infrastructure development.
What are NICDP and NICDC?
The National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) is a flagship initiative to develop greenfield industrial cities and economic corridors with world-class infrastructure and plug-and-play facilities for industries.
The programme seeks to create integrated industrial ecosystems by combining industrial production, transport connectivity, logistics, utilities, housing and urban infrastructure within planned industrial nodes.
The National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) is the implementing institution responsible for planning and developing these industrial corridors and their associated industrial nodes.
It functions as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the administrative control of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
NICDP currently covers 20 approved projects across 13 States and 7 industrial corridors.
Four industrial smart cities - Dholera (Gujarat), Shendra-Bidkin, Greater Noida and Vikram Udyogpuri- have reached the production stage.
FIRE Corridors: Integrating Industrial and Transport Infrastructure
The FIRE corridor approach integrates Freight, Industrial Development, Railways and Expressways to ensure that industrial growth and transport infrastructure are planned as a single interconnected system.
The approach seeks to prevent industrial nodes from developing in isolation by coordinating industrial land, freight movement, railway connectivity and expressway access.
PM GatiShakti provides the broader framework for such multimodal infrastructure planning by enabling coordination across different infrastructure sectors and government agencies.
Supporting Initiatives
Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS) 3.0, launched by DPIIT, assesses industrial parks on parameters including infrastructure, sustainability, logistics connectivity, skill linkages and tenant feedback, helping identify areas for improvement.
Multimodal Logistics Hubs are being developed to improve the movement and aggregation of freight, including projects at Nangal Chaudhary in Haryana and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
Such logistics infrastructure complements industrial corridors by improving first- and last-mile connectivity, warehousing and multimodal freight movement.
