National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7.
The first National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 2015.
August 7 was chosen to mark the Swadeshi Movement launched in 1905 at Calcutta Town Hall.
National Handloom Day is a time to honour weavers and reaffirm the resolve to protect India’s handloom heritage.
The 11th National Handloom Day will be celebrated on August 7, 2025.
The celebrations are coordinated by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Swadeshi Movement
Launched in the early 20th century, it was a direct consequence of the British India government's decision to partition Bengal.
The two main goals of this movement were the use of Swadeshi goods and the boycott of foreign-made goods.
Note:
The Handloom Hackathon 2025 will be held on August 2–3 to address real-world challenges in the handloom sector.
It focuses on design innovation, sustainability, market access, skill development, and community building under the theme “DREAM IT; DO IT.”
