Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031, a Strategic Action Plan for the development of India's ornamental fisheries sector, was released at Agatti, Lakshadweep, on 31 August 2026.
About the MissionThe mission seeks to establish a uniform national framework for scientific management, biosecurity, quality assurance and regulatory compliance across the ornamental fisheries value chain.It covers the entire value chain, from broodstock management and breeding to hatchery production, quarantine, aquarium operations, transport and trade.The mission aims to improve product quality, certification, market access and global competitiveness while supporting sustainable use of aquatic resources.
Ornamental Fisheries
Ornamental fisheries involve the breeding, rearing, keeping and trade of colourful and aesthetically valued aquatic species, mainly for aquariums.Unlike food fisheries, ornamental fisheries represent a high-value niche segment where value depends substantially on species characteristics, colour, rarity and quality.

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): The major Central Government scheme for the sustainable and responsible development of India's fisheries sector, including fisheries infrastructure, aquaculture and value-chain development.

Department of Fisheries: Functions under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and deals specifically with fisheries development and management.
