Why In News:
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the Transfer of Technology (ToT) of DRDO-developed conventional missile systems to Indian industry on 25 August 2026.
Transfer of Technology (ToT)
ToT refers to the transfer of technical knowledge, designs, processes, specifications and associated know-how required to enable an industrial entity to manufacture a defence system developed by a research organisation.
In this case, the DRDO-developed missile technologies can move from the R&D stage to industrial-scale production through qualified Indian manufacturers.
The decision covers conventional missile systems across different ranges and roles, including systems designed for air defence and long-range strike missions.
Defence Industrial Ecosystem
DRDO
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is India's premier defence R&D organisation under the Ministry of Defence.
It develops technologies and systems across areas such as missiles, electronics, radars, combat vehicles, aircraft, naval systems and strategic technologies.
DRDO's role is primarily research, development and technology creation, while industrial entities undertake large-scale manufacturing after technology transfer.
Department of Defence Production
The Department of Defence Production (DDP) functions under the Ministry of Defence.
It is responsible for policies relating to defence production, indigenisation and development of the defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Thus, DRDO → R&D and technology development, while DDP → defence production policy and industrial ecosystem.

They are intended to provide greater predictability for domestic defence manufacturers and encourage indigenous production and technology development.
Defence Industrial Corridors
India has established two Defence Industrial Corridors:
Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor
Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor
These corridors seek to create geographically concentrated ecosystems for defence manufacturing, investment, testing and technology development.
They are intended to connect DPSUs, private companies, MSMEs, startups and research institutions.
