Why it Matters? 

  • According to IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2025, India ranks 4th globally in renewable energy installed capacity, 4th in wind power, and 3rd in solar power capacity. It generated 1,08,494 GWh of solar energy in 2024–25, surpassing Japan’s 96,459 GWh to become the world’s third-largest solar energy producer. 

What You Should Know?  

  • The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 2009 and operational since July 8, 2010. 

  • It is headquartered in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.  

  • It has 169 plus EU as its members.  

  • India is an active member of IRENA and engages closely with it for policy guidance, capacity building, and technology exchange. 

  • It serves as the global voice for renewable energy, facilitating cooperation, policy support, capacity-building, technology transfer, and data dissemination among its member states. 

  • IRENA holds the status of a United Nations official observer.
