India's Skill Development Ecosystem (Indian Economy)
Why In News:
The progress of India's flagship skilling missions were highlighted, noting that youth employability has improved from 46% in 2020 to 56.4% in 2026.
With over 54% of India's population below 25 years and 62%+ in the 15-59 working-age group, the country's demographic dividend window is expected to last till around 2040, making skilling a central policy priority.

Flagship Skilling Initiatives
PMKVY 4.0 (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana): It offers short-term training, reskilling, and upskilling opportunities.
Over 400 new courses have been introduced in emerging fields such as AI, 5G, cybersecurity, green hydrogen, and drone technology.
Emphasizes international mobility and on-the-job training (OJT) through recognition of prior learning and by equipping workers with globally accepted skills.
Aligned with key schemes like PM Vishwakarma, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, National Green Hydrogen Mission, and NAL JAL Mitra, ensuring wider cross-sector benefits.
Target group: Individuals in the 15–59 years age bracket.
PM- NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme) 2.0: It is designed to promote and expand apprenticeship training across various industries.
The government directly transfers 25% of the prescribed stipend (up to ₹1,500/month) via DBT, while employers fund the remaining 75%.
The scheme broadens apprenticeship opportunities in emerging areas like AI, robotics, blockchain, green energy, and Industry 4.0.
It gives special emphasis to small establishments, MSMEs, aspirational districts, and the North-East Region.
Target group: Individuals aged 14–35 years.
National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF)
The NSQF is a competency-based framework with 8 levels that integrates academic, vocational and skill education, allowing learners to move between the general education and vocational streams and enabling lifelong learning and occupational mobility.
The NSQF is operationalised with support from the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET).
