Why it Matters? 

  • Himgiri, the third Nilgiri-class frigate (Project 17A), was delivered to the Indian Navy on 31 July 2025, marking a major stride in indigenous warship design and Aatmanirbharta. 

What You Should Know?  

  • Himgiri (Yard 3022) is the first of three advanced frigates under Project 17A. 

  • It is the first of the class built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. 

  • It is the largest and most modern warship made by the GRSE. 

  • It is a reincarnation of the erstwhile INS Himgiri, a Leander-class frigate decommissioned in 2005 after 30 years of service. 

  • The ship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata). 

  • The ship is 149 metres long and displaces 6,670 tonnes. 

  • It integrates BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles (anti-ship and land-attack) and Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles (aerial defence). 

  • It features Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced combat systems, and supports full-spectrum warfare (air, surface, submarine). 

  • It is propelled by a combined diesel and gas turbine system (CODOG) and supports helicopter operations.
