Himgiri, the third Nilgiri-class frigate (Project 17A), was delivered to the Indian Navy on 31 July 2025, marking a major stride in indigenous warship design and Aatmanirbharta.
What You Should Know?
Himgiri (Yard 3022) is the first of three advanced frigates under Project 17A.
It is the first of the class built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
It is the largest and most modern warship made by the GRSE.
It is a reincarnation of the erstwhile INS Himgiri, a Leander-class frigate decommissioned in 2005 after 30 years of service.
The ship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata).
The ship is 149 metres long and displaces 6,670 tonnes.
It integrates BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles (anti-ship and land-attack) and Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles (aerial defence).
It features Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced combat systems, and supports full-spectrum warfare (air, surface, submarine).
It is propelled by a combined diesel and gas turbine system (CODOG) and supports helicopter operations.
