Green Ammonia
Why it Matters?
India’s first-ever Green Ammonia auction was successfully conducted by SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd.) under the SIGHT Scheme (Mode-2A) of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. India achieved a record low price of ₹55.75/kg for Green Ammonia down from ₹100.28/kg in 2024
What You Should Know?
Green Ammonia
Green Ammonia is ammonia (NH₃) produced using Green Hydrogen and nitrogen from air, avoiding fossil fuels.
It is a zero-carbon fuel and fertilizer feedstock, important for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like shipping and fertilizers.
India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission (2023) with an aim to produce 5 MMT of green hydrogen per annum by 2030.
India aims to become a global hub for green ammonia exports, especially to the EU, Japan, and South Korea.
India’s first green ammonia plant was commissioned by IFFCO in Gujarat.
National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) was launched in January 2023 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
It aims to make India a global hub for production, utilization, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives.
It promotes use of Green Hydrogen in transport, industry, power, and fertilizer sectors.
SIGHT Scheme (Sustainable Infrastructure for Green Hydrogen Transition)
The SIGHT Scheme is a major component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023.
It is implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The scheme aims to promote domestic manufacturing of electrolyzers and incentivize the production of green hydrogen in India.
It is designed to make green hydrogen cost-competitive and support decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors like fertilizers, steel, and refining.
