Why it Matters? 

  • ISRO successfully tested the parachute system for Gaganyaan by dropping a dummy crew capsule from a Chinook helicopter in its first Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT-1).  

What You Should Know?  

  • Gaganyaan is India’s first human spaceflight mission being developed by ISRO. 

  • The mission aims to send a three-member crew into low Earth orbit at about 400 km altitude for three days and bring them back safely. 

  • The Human-rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (HLVM3) will be used for the mission. 

  • The first uncrewed mission, Gaganyaan-1 (G1), is scheduled for December 2025 and will carry the humanoid robot Vyommitra

  • The mission includes critical systems such as the Crew Emergency Escape System, Environmental Control and Life Support System, and advanced training facilities. 

  • On success, India will become the fourth country after USA, Russia, and China to demonstrate independent human spaceflight capability.
