Eklavya Model Residential School

Eklavya Model Residential School

Why it Matters?

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment has urged the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to ensure timely completion of all Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) through proactive monitoring.

What You Should Know?

  • Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) were launched in 1997-98 to provide quality residential education to tribal children in remote areas.

  • The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA).

  • EMRS are fully funded by the Central Government.

  • They are exclusively for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.

  • 100% of seats are reserved for ST students.

  • Schools are set up in blocks with more than 50% ST population and at least 20,000 tribal persons (as per Census data).

  • Classes Covered are from VI to XII.

  • EMRS are modeled on the lines of Navodaya Vidyalayas but tailored for tribal areas.
