Why it Matters? 

Azerbaijan has warned that the Caspian Sea’s rapidly falling water levels are causing disruptions to ports and oil shipments. The declining levels also threaten sturgeon and seal populations, raising environmental concerns. 

What You Should Know? 

  • The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest inland saltwater lake, located between Europe and Asia. 

  • It lies east of the Caucasus Mountains and west of Central Asian steppes. 

  • It is bordered by five countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. 

  • The sea holds significant offshore oil and gas reserves, making it strategically and economically important. 

  • Major rivers draining into the Caspian Sea include Volga, Ural, Terek, Kula, Aras, Sulak.
