Why In News:
Bharat Tex 2026, India's flagship global textile expo, is being held from 14 to 17 July 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, organised by the Bharat Tex Trade Federation (BTTF), a consortium of textile Export Promotion Councils, with support from the Ministry of Textiles.
Significance of the Textile Sector for India
Textiles contribute about 13% of India's industrial production and around 12% of national exports, and the sector employs over 45 million people directly, making it one of India's largest employment generators after agriculture.
India's textile and apparel exports reached about USD 8.49 billion in a recent reporting period, with major markets in the US, EU and UK, and emerging demand from the UAE, Japan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The government has set a target of Rs 9 lakh crore in textile exports by 2030.
Key Government Schemes
PM MITRA (Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel) Parks Scheme, approved in 2021, sets up seven integrated greenfield or brownfield textile parks across States, including Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, on a plug and play model to attract large scale investment.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Textiles covers man-made fibre apparel, man-made fibre fabrics and technical textiles, encouraging diversification away from India's traditional cotton-centric export basket.
The Prime Minister's 5F Vision, Farm to Fibre, Fibre to Factory, Factory to Fashion, and Fashion to Foreign markets, is the guiding philosophy for the sector under Make in India.
The Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (ATUFS) supports modernisation of textile machinery and processes.
Key Facts for Prelims
India is the world's second largest producer of textiles and garments and the largest producer of cotton and jute globally.
Technical textiles, used in medical, agricultural and industrial applications, are a thrust area under the National Technical Textiles Mission (2020).
The Global Textile Dialogue at Bharat Tex will discuss ESG standards, Industry 5.0 and resilient supply chains, reflecting the shift of Indian textile exports toward sustainability compliant global value chains, especially for the EU market.
