What are Aqueous Batteries?

Definition: Batteries that use water-based (aqueous) electrolytes instead of organic solvent-based electrolytes used in conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Key Advantage: Non-flammable, non-toxic, and lower manufacturing cost compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Types: Aqueous zinc-ion batteries, aqueous sodium-ion batteries, and aqueous lithium-ion batteries are being developed for grid-scale applications.

Applications: Grid-level energy storage for renewable energy (solar, wind), consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and off-grid power systems.

Significance for India

Energy Storage Mission: India has a target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030, requiring massive grid storage infrastructure.

Import Reduction: Reducing dependence on cobalt, nickel, and lithium by developing water-based alternatives strengthens strategic energy autonomy.
