Tuberculosis Incidence in India
Context:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Report, 2025, India has recorded one of the world's steepest declines in tuberculosis incidence.
This is almost double the pace of decline observed globally
The Union Health Ministry noted this was one of the highest declines in TB incidence globally, outpacing reductions in other high-burden countries
Key Statistics on India's Progress (2015-2024)
India's TB incidence fell by 21% (from 237 TB cases per lakh population in 2015 to 187 per lakh population in 2024)
The global decline in the same period was 12%.
The TB mortality rate has decreased from 28 per lakh population in 2015 to 21 per lakh population in 2024.
Treatment coverage surged from 53% in 2015 to over 92% in 2024
The number of missing cases (those with TB but not reported) was reduced from an estimated 15 lakh in 2015 to less than one lakh in 2024
The treatment success rate in India was about 90%
This is ahead of the global average of 88%

This flagship mission has achieved extensive reach
It has screened over 19 crore vulnerable individuals for TB across the country
This screening led to the detection of over 24.5 lakh TB patients, including 8.61 lakh asymptomatic TB cases
