The Quad

Context:

IN the first confirmation of the Quad leaders' summit, which was to be hosted by India this year, being pushed to 2026, US President Donald Trump has said he could travel to the country next year.

About the Quad

It is an informal strategic forum.

It comprises four democracies:

Australia

India

Japan

the United States.

The grouping's origins can be traced back to the 2004 Tsunami relief efforts.

It was formally proposed as a strategic dialogue by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007 and was revived in 2017.

It got elevated to Leader’s level in 2021(Virtual meeting).

Key Objectives and Significance

The Quad's primary objective is to support a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region that is inclusive and resilient.

It is widely viewed as a strategic grouping to counterbalance China's growing economic and military influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

But themembers have clarified that the Quad is not a formal military alliance (like NATO)

Areas of Cooperation: The group focuses on non-traditional security issues, including:

Maritime security and freedom of navigation.

Health security

For example, the Quad Vaccine Partnership.

Critical and emerging technologies

For example, 5G, AI, and semiconductors.

Climate change and clean energy.

Infrastructure development and connectivity.

Cybersecurity and supply chain resilience. For example, the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative.

HumanitarianAssistance & Disaster Relief (HADR)

Counter-Terrorism – Joint condemnation of terrorism (26/11, Pathankot), FATF compliance, Tabletop Exercises (TTX).

India's Role in the Quad

The Quad is a central pillar of India's foreign policy

India led Initiatives: HADR, MAITRI, Quad Solar Projects, STEM Scholarships.

It aligns with its Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision.

India’s emphasis on “ASEAN centrality” and “strategic autonomy” ensures the QUAD remains inclusive, not an anti-China bloc.
