  • For the first time, a specially curated animal contingent of the Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC) will debut at the Republic Day 2026 parade.

  • It showcases the Army's unique blend of tradition and operational capability in securing challenging frontiers.

  • About the RVC Contingent:

  • The contingent includes Bactrian camels, Zanskar ponies, raptors, and Army dogs

  • These animals provide indispensable logistical support, surveillance, and operational aid in harsh terrains like Siachen Glacier and Ladakh.

  • Key Animal Breeds:

  • Bactrian Camels (Camelus bactrianus):

  • It is distinguished by two humps which store fat converted to energy/water.

  • They are adapted to rocky deserts and extreme temperature fluctuations

  • They are inducted for the cold deserts of Ladakh

  • They can carry loads up to 250 kg at altitudes above 15,000 feet

  • While domesticated versions exist, the wild Bactrian camel is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

  • Zanskar Ponies:

  • It is a rare indigenous mountain breed from Ladakh

  • It is known for extraordinary endurance despite their small size.

  • They can carry 40-60 kg loads at altitudes over 15,000 feet and temperatures as low as minus 40°C

  • They support logistics and mounted patrols, covering up to 70 km in a single day.

  • Other Highlights:

  • Four raptors will be showcased for bird-strike control and aerial surveillance

  • Indigenous Dogs are in the Silent Warriors squad includes indigenous breeds like (Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, and Chippiparai) highlighting the Make in India initiative in defence.
