Context:
The Sevilla Forum on Debt is a new global platform to address mounting sovereign debt challenges.
It was launched at the 16th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD16) in Geneva.
What is it?
It is a Spanish-led initiative supported by UNCTAD and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)
Key Features:
Its aim is to create an inclusive space for dialogue and action on sovereign debt reform.
Its goal is to advance fair and sustainable debt solutions and reform the global debt architecture
The Forum will act as a "vital bridge between borrowers and creditors".
It will track the implementation of political commitments and help transform them into institutional mechanisms for fairer debt governance.
The Forum is one of the first tangible outcomes of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development.
It is part of the "Sevilla Platform for Action" and complements the "Sevilla Commitment" which is the main outcome document adopted at FfD4 that sets a roadmap for addressing unsustainable debt burdens in developing economies.
The launch comes as global public debt hit $102 trillion in 2024 and with 3.4 billion people living in countries that spend more on debt servicing than on health or education.
