Why In News:

IIT Delhi has topped India's list in the QS World University Rankings for the second consecutive year, climbing to 118th position globally.

This is significant in the context of India's higher education ambitions set out under the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

What are QS World University Rankings?

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings, published annually since 2004, is one of the three most authoritative global ranking systems alongside Times Higher Education (THE) and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU/Shanghai Rankings).

India's Performance

IIT Delhi ranked 118th globally; India's top-ranked institution for two consecutive years.

IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore are typically within the global top 250.

India has the highest number of ranked institutions among emerging economies after China.

Key Policy Context

NEP 2020: Targets at least one Indian university in the global top 100 by 2035 and creates a pathway for foreign universities to operate in India.

Institutions of Eminence (IoE): 20 institutions (10 public, 10 private) granted greater academic and financial autonomy with additional funding to achieve global rankings. Governed by the UGC (Institutions of Eminence) Regulations, 2017.

NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework): India's own domestic ranking system. Covers Teaching and Learning Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
