Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently paid heartfelt tributes to the revolutionary freedom fighter Sukhdev Thapar on the occasion of his birth anniversary on May 15.
The Minister remembered him as an "immortal revolutionary" and a "symbol of indomitable courage, patriotism and sacrifice" who dedicated his entire life to the cause of India's independence.
Early Life and Revolutionary Role:
Born on May 15, 1907, Sukhdev Thapar remains one of the most revered and iconic figures of India's historical freedom movement against British colonial rule.
He is widely regarded as a key strategist and a foundational pillar of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), an organization dedicated to armed struggle against the British administration.
Within the HSRA, Sukhdev worked intimately alongside his fellow legendary revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru.
Defining Actions and Martyrdom:
Avenging Lala Lajpat Rai:
Following the death of the prominent nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai, Sukhdev played a pivotal and direct role alongside Bhagat Singh and Rajguru in retaliatory actions against British authorities.
These specific revolutionary activities transformed the trio into iconic figures and inspired countless young Indians to actively join the freedom struggle.
For their revolutionary activities, Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru were executed by British authorities in Lahore Jail on March 23, 1931.
Shaheed Diwas:
Their collective martyrdom became a defining, transformative moment in India's independence struggle.
In honour of their supreme sacrifice and enduring legacy of nationalism, India formally observes Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day) every year on March 23.
