‘Pax Silica’ Initiative

‘Pax Silica’ Initiative
  • Context:

  • The United States has launched a new strategic initiative named ‘Pax Silica’ to secure global high-technology supply chains.

  • About the Initiative

  • The term plays on “Pax Sinica” (Chinese peace: Pax is Latin for peace), aiming to establish a US-led order in the technology sector.

  • The initiative is designed to build a secure, prosperous, and innovation-driven silicon supply chain.

  • It covers the entire ecosystem—from critical minerals and energy inputs to advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and logistics.

  • The primary aim is to reduce global reliance on Chinese dominance in high-tech industries and secure supply chains among trusted allies.

  • Member Nations:

  • The grouping currently includes nine countries:

  • United States

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • Australia

  • Singapore

  • The Netherlands

  • United Kingdom

  • Israel

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • India’s Position:

  • India has not been included in this initial grouping.

  • With the exception of India, all other Quad countries are part of the new initiative.

  • Critics argue that membership would have been advantageous for India's semiconductor ambitions, while the exclusion has raised questions about the current trajectory of the US-India strategic partnership in high-tech sectors.
