Why it Matters? 

  • “Operation Fire Trail” by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) uncovered and seized ₹35 crore worth of smuggled Chinese firecrackers concealed as decorative items, highlighting risks to public safety and misuse of SEZ and trade provisions. 

What You Should Know? 

  • “Operation Fire Trail” is a major anti-smuggling operation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). 

  • Objective: 

  • Detect and intercept illegal consignments of restricted explosives, especially Chinese fireworks. 

  • Prevent misuse of SEZs (Special Economic Zones) for unauthorized diversion into the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA). 

  • Ensure compliance with India’s Foreign Trade Policy and Explosive Rules, 2008. 

  • Regulation of firecrackers in India: 

  • Import of firecrackers is restricted under ITC (HS) Classification in the Foreign Trade Policy. 

  • It requires mandatory licensing from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) under the Explosives Rules, 2008.
