Why In News:
The Union Home Minister chaired the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong.
Key Highlights from the Session:
The session reviewed peace, connectivity and development initiatives across the Northeast and aligned with the Act East Policy and the Purvodaya vision.
Sabroom Land Port and customs centres to boost trade with SE Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
Action plan to eliminate narcotics trafficking in the region.
Key Facts for Prelims
The NEC was constituted under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, and became functional in 1972.
It is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region (NER).
By a 2002 amendment, the NEC was made a regional planning body, and Sikkim was added as the eighth member state.
Member states (8): Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
Headquarters: Shillong, Meghalaya. It functions under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Act East Policy (renamed from Look East Policy in 2014) positions the Northeast as a gateway to ASEAN and East Asia.
