National Panchayati Raj Day 2026
Context:
On April 24, 2026, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj celebrated National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) pan-India, with the central event organized at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Observed annually, this day commemorates the enactment of the landmark 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, which officially granted constitutional status and legal recognition to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) across the country.
This year's celebration marks 33 years of that defining milestone in India’s democratic journey.
Highlights of the 2026 Celebrations:
The event features the reading of the Prime Minister’s message to PRIs nationwide.
The Ministry will also formally release the Report on Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI)-2.0.
Under the Ministry's 'Panchayat Dharohar Initiative', three illustrated publications on rural heritage are being unveiled.
These include specific monographs on the rural heritage of Tripura, Tirupati, and Uttarkashi ('Saumya Kashi: The Soul of Himalayan Heritage').
Across the country, Gram Panchayats are holding Gram Sabha meetings.
The Ministry has directed Central Ministries and line-department officials to attend these local grassroots meetings alongside elected representatives, creating a powerful symbol of convergence and demonstrating a "Whole-of-Government" approach.
Scale and Vision:
India currently boasts over 2.7 lakh Gram Panchayats (including PESA panchayats) that serve nearly 65% of the national population.
Localisation of SDGs:
17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been successfully mapped to nine local themes.
These themes form the foundational basis of the Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs), which have been prepared by over 2.55 lakh Panchayats under the People's Plan Campaign.
The core objective is creating "Viksit Panchayats"—villages that are water-sufficient, clean, poverty-free, and digitally empowered—as the fundamental building blocks for a developed India by the centenary of its independence in 2047.
