MH 60R 'Seahawk' Helicopters

MH 60R 'Seahawk' Helicopters
  • Context:

  • The Indian Navy has commissioned its second MH 60R helicopter squadron, INAS 335, at INS Hansa in Goa.

  • The squadron has been nicknamed “Ospreys” after the fish-hunting bird of prey.

  • This follows the induction of the first squadron, INAS 334, at INS Garuda in Kochi in March 2024

  • About MH 60R Seahawk

  • These are US-origin helicopters, which are the maritime versions of the Black Hawk helicopters.

  • India has acquired 24 of these submarine-hunting helicopters from the US to strengthen its blue-water capabilities.

  • The aircraft is fully integrated with the Indian Navy's fleet and can operate from shore bases as well as maritime assets (like aircraft carriers)

  • Key Capabilities:

  • The helicopter is designed for a wide range of operations including:

  • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW).

  • Search and Rescue (SAR) and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC).

  • Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP):

  • It can perform naval logistics operations where supplies are transferred by helicopter between ships at sea or from shore to ship without docking.

  • Strategic Significance:

  • The induction is crucial to counter asymmetric or non-conventional threats used by state and non-state actors (such as long-range missiles on small platforms, drones, and autonomous surface vessels)

  • The Ministry of Defence has signed Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOAs) with the US for a comprehensive 5-year sustainment support package worth approximately Rs 7,995 crore to ensure optimal performance and maintenance.
