Why it Matters? 

  • India and Singapore strengthened ties by signing five MoUs and pledging deeper cooperation in defence technology, green energy, and maritime security. Singapore also recognized India’s interest in patrolling the Malacca Straits during PM Lawrence Wong’s visit.

  • It is located between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. 

  • It connects the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) with the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean). 

  • It spans approximately 800 km (500 miles) in length, covering around 25,000 sq km. 

  • It’s one of the world’s busiest maritime passages, forming a key link between Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. 

  • It handles approximately 25–30% of global seaborne trade, transporting goods like oil, manufactured items, coal, palm oil, and coffee 

  • It accounts for roughly one-third of all sea-borne oil traffic.
