Why In News:
The Railway Ministry informed Parliament that only two consequential train accidents occurred in 2026-27, a sharp improvement attributed to the accelerated rollout of Kavach Version 4.0, India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.

What is Kavach?
About:Kavach is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, originally developed in 2012 as the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and later renamed “Kavach” (meaning armour).
Latest Version: Kavach 4.0 represents the most advanced version, refined through continuous upgrades and operational feedback.
Design & Suitability: It is specifically designed for India’s high-density, multi-line railway network, ensuring quick response, high reliability, and seamless integration with existing signalling and interlocking systems.
Technology Base: The system uses a combination of microprocessors, GPS, and radio communication to continuously track train position, speed, and signal status.
Safety Functions: Kavach can automatically prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control overspeeding, and apply brakes to avoid collisions.
It also ensures safe train operations in low visibility or adverse weather, while alerting loco pilots about wrong-direction movement and level-crossing gate status.
Standards & Approval: It meets Safety Integrity Level (SIL)-4, the highest global railway safety standard, and is approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
Key Facts for Prelims
Consequential train accidents have fallen from 135 in 2014-15 to just a handful in 2026-27, reflecting the impact of sustained safety investment.
Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK): A dedicated non-lapsable safety fund created in 2017 to finance replacement and renewal of critical safety assets on Indian Railways.
