India's Steel Output
Why In News:
India's steel sector sustained its growth momentum in May 2026, with both crude and finished steel production rising year-on-year and exports increasing sharply.
The government also continued issuing Green Steel certificates, underlining the sector's transition toward low-carbon production.
Key Facts for Prelims:
India is the second-largest producer of crude steel in the world, after China.
Green Steel: Steel produced with significantly lower carbon emissions, using technologies such as hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI), electric arc furnaces, and renewable energy.
India's Green Steel Taxonomy defines 'green steel' on the basis of CO2 emission intensity, with a star-rating system based on emissions per tonne of finished steel.
National Steel Policy, 2017 targets 300 MTPA crude steel capacity by 2030-31.
