India’s Chip Revolution: SEMICON
Why it Matters?
India is set to host SEMICON India 2025.
The event, whose theme is "Building the Next Semiconductor Powerhouse" is a crucial platform to showcase the nation's rapid progress under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
What you should know?
India Semiconductor Mission (ISM):
It was launched in 2021.
It is the nodal agency for developing India's semiconductor and display ecosystem with a financial outlay of ₹76,000 crore.
It provides financial support for setting up semiconductor fabrication (fabs), display manufacturing, and chip design units.
Till date, 10 projects with a cumulative investment of ₹1.60 lakh crore have been approved across six states.
Key Segments of India's Growing Ecosystem:
Packaging:
A major milestone was the recent launch of India's first OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) Pilot Line by CG-Semi in Gujarat.
This is expected to produce the country's first 'Made in India' chip.
Design:
The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme is actively supporting startups and innovators in indigenous chip design.
So far 23 projects have been sanctioned.
Skilling:
The government is focused on workforce development.
It aims to train 85,000 skilled professionals in the semiconductor design sector over the next 10 years.
SEMICON India Conference:
This is India's premier annual event for the semiconductor industry.
This is jointly organized by the ISM and the global industry association SEMI.
It serves as a key platform for fostering collaboration between global industry leaders, policymakers, academia, and startups to advance India's semiconductor goals.
