India Emerging as a Major Hub of Renewable Energy

India Emerging as a Major Hub of Renewable Energy
  • Context:

  • Speaking at the Global Energy Leaders' Summit 2025 in Puri(Odisha), Union Minister of MNRE highlighted that India has added 31.25 GW of renewable energy (including 24.28 GW of solar power) in the current financial year alone

  • India achieved the milestone of 100 GW of renewable energy in 70 years, but the second 100 GW was achieved in just two years.

  • India’s Standing in Global Renewable Energy:

  • According to the IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2025, India holds significant global rankings

  • 3rd in solar energy capacity

  • 4th in wind energy capacity

  • 4th globally in total installed renewable energy capacity

  • Between 2022 and 2024, India contributed 46 GW to global solar additions, making it the third-largest contributor

  • India’s Solar Surge:

  • India's solar capacity has witnessed a remarkable over 40-fold increase in the last 11 years, growing from roughly 3 GW in 2014 to around 130 GW in 2025.

  • Solar energy has now become the largest contributor to the country's renewable energy portfolio.

  • Domestic module manufacturing capacity has also scaled up massively from 2 GW in 2014 to 120 GW currently.

  • Presently Solar capacity accounting for over 50 % of the nation’s total installed power capacity as of October 2025, marking a historic shift toward low-carbon energy.

  •  Panchamrit Framework

  • Outlined at COP26 in Glasgow, the Panchamrit framework sets five key targets for India's climate action:-
