Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)

Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)
  • Why it Matters?

  • On September 9 2025, the government of Ethiopia officially inaugurated Africa’s largest dam, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

  • A gravity dam on the Blue Nile River, about twenty-eight miles east of the border with Sudan, its primary purpose is electricity production (5.15 Gw).

  • Egypt has opposed the project, raising concerns that it will reduce the downstream water supply on the Blue Nile. Sudan has also registered opposition to the project, calling for joint management of the river.

  • What you should know?

  • The GERD is a $5 billion hydroelectric dam.

  • It is located on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia.

  • The project was launched in 2011

  • It was funded primarily by Ethiopians.

  •  Its objective is to double Ethiopia's national electricity generation capacity. As of now, only 54% of its population have access to reliable power.

  • Geography of the Nile River:

  • The Blue Nile originates in Ethiopia.

  • It is a major tributary of the Nile River.

  • It supplies more than 80% of the water for the combined Nile River system.

  • The Blue Nile merges with the White Nile in Khartoum, Sudan, to form the Nile River, which then flows north through Egypt to the Mediterranean.
