  • Context: 

  • The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first-ever air shipment of GI-tagged Indi Limes and Puliyankudi Limes to the United Kingdom  

  • A total of 500 kg was exported 

  • 350 kg of Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka 

  • 150 kg of Puliyankudi Lime from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu 

  • Significance: 

  • The shipment marks a significant milestone in expanding the global footprint of India's GI-tagged horticultural produce.  

  • It aligns with APEDA's efforts to enhance global recognition of this produce and provide better incomes for farmers through branding and market diversification.  

  • About Indi Lime 

  • It is a GI-tagged product from Karnataka. 

  • It is cultivated primarily in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka. 

  • It is known for its superior quality, zesty aroma, high juice yield and balanced acidity 

  • Besides culinary applications, the lime is also valued in traditional medicine and cultural practices 

  • About Puliyankudi Lime 

  • It is a GI-tagged product from Tamil Nadu.  

  • It is cultivated in Puliyankudi, which is often called the Lemon City of Tamil Nadu. 

  • The specific variety is the Kadayam variety. 

  • Key Characteristics: 

  • Thin peel. 

  • Strong acidity. 

  • High ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) content of 34.3 mg/100g 

  • High juice percentage around 55% 

  • Benefits:  

  • It is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and supports immunity and digestion.
