GI Tagged Lemon Varieties from South India: Indi and Puliyankudi Limes

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first-ever air shipment of GI-tagged Indi Limes and Puliyankudi Limes to the United Kingdom
A total of 500 kg was exported
350 kg of Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka
150 kg of Puliyankudi Lime from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu
Significance:
The shipment marks a significant milestone in expanding the global footprint of India's GI-tagged horticultural produce.
It aligns with APEDA's efforts to enhance global recognition of this produce and provide better incomes for farmers through branding and market diversification.
About Indi Lime
It is a GI-tagged product from Karnataka.
It is cultivated primarily in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka.
It is known for its superior quality, zesty aroma, high juice yield and balanced acidity
Besides culinary applications, the lime is also valued in traditional medicine and cultural practices
About Puliyankudi Lime
It is a GI-tagged product from Tamil Nadu.
It is cultivated in Puliyankudi, which is often called the Lemon City of Tamil Nadu.
The specific variety is the Kadayam variety.

Strong acidity.
High ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) content of 34.3 mg/100g
High juice percentage around 55%
