Key Facts for Prelims

India's BMD Programme: Two-tier system: Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) for high-altitude (exo-atmospheric) interception and Advanced Air Defence (AAD) for low-altitude (endo-atmospheric) interception.

A BMD system is an advanced network of radars, command centers, and interceptor missiles designed to detect, track, and destroy incoming ballistic missiles.

Thisplaces India among an elite group of nations (United States, Russia, China, and Israel) with advanced BMD capabilities including defence against Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs).

S-400 Triumf: Long-range surface-to-air missile system procured from Russia; India agreed to acquire 5 squadrons despite US CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) concerns.

Agni Prime (Agni-P): New generation ballistic missile with canisterised launch capability; demonstrates India's maturing second-strike capacity.

DRDL: Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad - DRDO's premier missile development lab.
