Dhruv New Generation Helicopter
Context:
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) recently completed the inaugural flight of the Dhruv New Generation (NG) helicopter.
This event also marked the receipt of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) certification for the indigenous manufacturing of the Shakti civil engine, a critical step before commercial release.
Key Features:
The Dhruv-NG is designed to carry 14 passengers.
It is versatile, catering to VIP movements, heli-tourism, and medical ambulance services.
Currently, 65% of the aircraft is indigenously produced.
HAL aims to increase this to 80% over the next decade to enhance self-reliance.
It is powered by the Shakti civil engine
It has now received manufacturing certification from the DGCA.
Significance:
Historically focused on defence, HAL is now pivoting to balance its portfolio with civil aviation
It is targeting a market demand estimated at 1,000 helicopters currently and up to 15,000 over the next 10 years.
The high indigenous content ensures competitive pricing compared to global counterparts.
State-run Pawan Hans has already placed orders for eight units to support offshore operations at Bombay High (ONGC).
The helicopter is expected to boost tourism in challenging terrains like Char Dham, where connectivity is crucial.
