DCI Dredge Godavari
Context:
The keel for India's largest dredger, named "DCI Dredge Godavari," was recently laid at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). Subsequently, the vessel was launched on October 18, 2025.
The dredger is owned by the Visakhapatnam-based Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL)
Type of Vessel:
Dredge Godavari is a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD).
A TSHD dredges loose material like sand, gravel, silt, or clay from the seabed using large, powerful pumps and engines.
It stores the dredged material in its own hopper and discharges it elsewhere.
It has a large hopper capacity of 12,000 cubic meters.
Series & Design:
It is the first-ever 12,000 cubic meter Beagle Series dredger in the world.
It is built under the globally acclaimed "Beagle" platform of Royal IHC, Netherlands customized to meet Indian requirements.
Technology & Features:
It is considered the most sophisticated and technologically advanced dredger ever built in India
It features advanced automation, highly efficient dredging mechanisms, and enhanced safety and environmental systems.
Significance
It is the largest dredger in the country.
Its addition increases DCIL's dredging capacity significantly from 60 million cubic meters to 80 million cubic meters annually.
It supports the Maritime India Vision (MIV-2030) and the Port-led development initiative of the government.
It enhances India's overall dredging capabilities, supporting the growth of the coastal and inland shipping market and contributing to the blue economy vision.
