Dard Aryan Tribe
Why it Matters?
The Dard Aryan tribe is a small community residing in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh.
The community is actively working to preserve its heritage through festivals and by encouraging the younger generation to stay connected to their roots.
What you should know?
The community resides in the villages of Dha, Hanu, Garkone, and Darchik in the Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh.
These villages are situated on both sides of the Indus River, inhabited by the Buddhist Dard Tribes.
The villages are together called the “Aryan valley”. “The word ‘Dard’ is derived from a Sanskrit word, ‘Daradas’, which means people who live on hillsides”.
They are known for their distinct physical features and are believed to be descended from the original Aryan race.
The women wear distinctive headgear called 'Tepi,' adorned with fresh flowers, silver jewelry, and sheep wool.
The community celebrates Bonona, a festival of flowers, and the annual 'Aryan Festival' to showcase and preserve their culture.
They have a unique system of marriage, allowing for inter-community unions.
Challenges:
Migration:
Many younger members of the community are migrating to urban centers like Leh and Kargil in search of better education and employment opportunities.
Modernization:
Increased exposure to modern lifestyles and tourism poses a threat to their traditional practices and customs.
