Constitution of India in Sindhi Language
Context:
To commemorate Sindhi Bhasha Diwas on April 10, 2026, the Vice-President of India officially unveiled an updated edition of the Constitution of India translated into the Sindhi language.
Highlights of the Release:
To properly cater to the diverse linguistic and cultural heritage of the Sindhi-speaking community, the newly updated Constitutional text was deliberately published in two distinct scripts.
It was formally launched in the Devanagari script (marking its very first edition in this script) as well as in the Persian script (representing its second edition).
The rigorous translation and updating process was executed by the Legislative Department, which operates under the Ministry of Law and Justice.
Specifically, the department's Official Languages Wing, supported by dedicated Regional Languages Officers, played a fundamental role in successfully curating this specialized linguistic iteration.
Eighth Schedule Mandate:
A written address from the Prime Minister underscored that this release is part of a broader, high-priority governmental mission to translate and democratize the Constitution across all regional languages officially recognized under the Eighth Schedule.
Sindhi and the Eighth Schedule:
The event served as a platform to recount the historical journey of the Sindhi language and its ultimate recognition within the Indian constitutional framework.
During the proceedings, special tribute was paid to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Law Ministry officials highlighted his exceptional leadership and pioneering political efforts that directly facilitated the formal inclusion of the Sindhi language into the prestigious Eighth Schedule.
