Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)
Context:
As tensions continue to escalate in West Asia, threatening global energy and commodity supply routes, the Prime Minister recently chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation and implement mitigating measures
Key Decisions & Mitigating Measures:
The committee discussed strategies to diversify the sources of major imports, specifically focusing on fertilizers, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals.
New export destinations to promote Indian goods will also be developed.
Securing alternate sources of fertilizers is crucial ahead of the coming kharif season, especially in light of disruptions to natural gas imports from Qatar.
The committee also called for maintaining adequate coal stocks at all power plants to meet peak summer power demand amidst potential natural gas constraints.
The Prime Minister directed the creation of a Group of Ministers (GoM) and a group of secretaries to exclusively manage the crisis through a "whole-of-government approach".
The CCS instructed proper coordination with state governments to ensure there is no black-marketing or hoarding of important commodities, aiming for the least inconvenience to citizens.
