Why it matters?
The Department of Fisheries (DoF), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD) has signed a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to strengthen Blue Port infrastructure in India.
What you should know? Blue ports:
These are fishing ports that go beyond their traditional functions to evolve into sustainable development platforms for aquatic value chains.
Blue Ports Framework:
Focus: Fishing ports, assisting them in adopting sustainable processes.
Integrates smart technologies: IoT devices, sensor networks, satellite communication, and data analytics.
Eco-friendly features: rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting, electric-powered equipment, and robust waste management systems.
Harbours Chosen: Vanakbara (Diu), Karaikal (Puducherry), and Jakhau (Gujarat)
