Bioeconomy
Why it Matters?
India aims to achieve a $300 billion bioeconomy by 2030 through inclusive participation, regional innovation, and sustainable biomanufacturing under the BioE3 Policy, as unveiled on World Bioproduct Day by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science & Technology.
What You Should Know?
Bioeconomy refers to the industrial use of biological resources (plants, animals, and microorganisms) and the replication of natural biological processes to produce goods and services.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh account for over two-thirds of the bioeconomy value.
The Eastern and Northeastern regions contribute less than 6%.
India’s bioeconomy share in GDP (4.2%) is comparable to countries like the US and China.
BioE3 Policy:
India launched the BioE3 Policy to promote advanced biomanufacturing and high-performance bio-based product development.
Six thematic sectors under the BioE3 Policy:
Bio-based chemicals & enzymes
Functional foods & smart proteins
Precision biotherapeutics
Climate-resilient agriculture
Carbon capture & utilization
Futuristic marine & space research
BioEnablers such as Bio-AI Hubs, Biofoundries, and Biomanufacturing Hubs will be set up to scale R&D and product commercialization.
Bio-AI Hubs will leverage artificial intelligence and data-driven research to develop advanced bio-based technologies.
Biofoundries are highly automated facilities that combine biomanufacturing with advanced technologies to accelerate the design, construction, and testing of biological systems.
BioEnablers will also offer interdisciplinary training and internships to build skilled human resources in biomanufacturing.
