Why In News:
The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme has evolved into a nationwide movement driving behavioural change and girl child empowerment.
About BBBP
Launched: 22nd January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana.
Implementing ministries: A joint initiative of MWCD, MoHFW, and MoE.
Objective: To ensure survival, protection, and empowerment of the girl child; specifically to address declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR).
Key Facts for Prelims
PIB data shows the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) improved from 918 (2014-15) to 929 (2024-25) per the HMIS (MoHFW), and Girls' Enrolment at Secondary Level rose from 75.51% to 80.2% over the same period (UDISE, MoE).
PCPNDT Act, 1994: Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act; prohibits sex determination of the foetus. Allows the use of techniques like ultrasound and amniocentesis only for medical reasons.
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: Small savings scheme for girl children, provides guaranteed returns for girls' education and marriage. Investment of minimum Rs. 250 and maximum Rs. 1.5 lakh in a financial year.
One Stop Centre (Sakhi) Scheme: Provides integrated support to women affected by violence - medical, legal, and psychological aid under one roof.
