Aviation Fuel

Aviation Fuel

Context: In April 2025, China's aviation fuel exports surged to a 13-month high of 1.89 million metric tonnes, driven by increased crude oil imports and rising international travel demand.

Important Pointers:

  • Definition: Aviation fuel is a specialized type of petroleum-based fuel used to power aircraft. It must meet strict performance and safety standards.

  •  Types of Aviation Fuel

  • Jet A / Jet A-1: Kerosene-based fuels used in commercial aviation.

  • Jet B: More volatile, used in extremely cold regions.

  • Avgas (Aviation Gasoline): Used in small piston-engine aircraft.

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Fuel derived from renewable sources like agricultural waste, algae, municipal waste, etc., that reduces carbon emissions compared to conventional ATF.

  • Benefits of SAF

  • Up to 80% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Drop-in fuel: compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.

  • Reduces soot and sulphur emissions.

  •  Challenges

  • Higher production cost.

  • Limited feedstock availability.

  • Need for policy support and infrastructure development.
